Sectors
Stormwater drainage
McFadyen Pipeline Construction was engaged by John Holland to deliver stormwater drainage works as part of the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 project.
The scope included the installation of approximately 11,000 metres of stormwater drainage, ranging from 225mm to 1650mm in diameter, along with more than 750 drainage pits. Works were carried out through a high service corridor in a live traffic environment, requiring careful staging and coordination to maintain access and keep the project moving.
Ground conditions presented ongoing complexity, with very sandy soils and works taking place below the purged tidal water table. Excavations were completed using trench boxes and shoring systems up to 6.5 metres deep, supported by spear dewatering and water management systems to maintain safe and stable working conditions.
Working within a live traffic environment added further pressure, with road surfaces required to be reinstated and traffic ready at the end of each shift.
Through detailed planning, experienced crews and the right plant on site, McFadyen successfully delivered the works in line with program requirements. The team maintained steady progress despite challenging conditions, ensuring the drainage infrastructure was completed safely, efficiently and to specification.
